Locking Out Critics

In our forum, I've put an article about studios refusing to give press screenings of the film if they feel critics will pan the film. Movies like Stay Alive and Benchwarmers will be released, given a fair chance and then destroyed by the next weekend by critics and by not screening a press screenings, aren't they already shooting themselves in the foot?

Are reviews really hurting a film's opening weekend that much? If so, aren't we just doing our job as reliable critics?

Full Frame Festival

Well, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is what I would like to call a tremendous success on the part of myself and Monkey as well as the Picture Show Pundits as a whole. We seem to have attained a small dose of celebrity on our third year of coverage and with publicity generated by our online endeavors as well as the good word of mouth by people such as Jacqui, our Full Frame press contact. People were approaching us knowing who we were when we had no clue who they were. People were excited about discussing our split from Smart-Popcorn and striking out on our own. People were incredibly excited about podcasting, as we apparently are pioneers at least in the confines of the press who visit Durham every year for this festival. People were taking our pictures and writing about us in their own press blogs or articles. Crazy shit, really.

On the industry side, we found ourselves networking with every filmmaker we could get close to (which was a lot). Sydney Pollack was a pleasure to meet. Jacqui gave him part of my Romance Article where I discussed two of his films much to my embarassment, but when I saw him actually reading it it was doubly awkward but also kind of exhilarating.

On the public side, people were actually interested in hearing our takes on the films presented and the swag we put on tables went like hotcakes, from stickers to magnets to business cards and most impressively our podcast cds (We had over 50 cds and they were all gone by the first day except for some we kept on hand for personal distribution....man). So, hooray for Picture Show Pundits on that note. We talked up Matt's coverage of South by Southwest since that just happened and mentioned Shelly and Brian as well for their festival history. And people were impressed with just how spread out, yet seemingly focused, we all were (even internationally so).

All in all, it was a great experience and it was disappointing to have it end today, but it has bolstered our confidence in what we are doing with PSP. Perhaps Sarah will have more to add in this context.

As for the festival itself and its many films, stay tuned our podcast for hopefully extensive coverage. Twenty movies, 5 press functions, and almost twenty dvd screeners to cover.
